As the Muslim world’s first opera, which premiered in Baku when Azerbaijan was part of the Russian Empire, Hajibeyli’s “Layla and Majnun” was conceived as an East-meets-West work. Rather than trying to blend traditions, he created an epic with specific sections composed for arias and Western instruments and mugham sections where he specified Azeri modes and left space for vocal improvisation. Under the direction of Yo-Yo Ma, the Silk Road Ensemble first tackled the work about a decade ago at the urging of Alim Qasimov, an iconic figure in Azerbaijan who wanted to raise awareness of Hajibeyli’s groundbreaking opera, which is performed annually in Baku. Arranged by Qasimov and violinists Colin Jacobsen and Johnny Gandelsman (fellow Silk Road founders), the opera seemed tailor made for a collaboration with Morris, with a story “right in line with other tragic works that Mark has staged, like ‘Dido and Aeneas’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet,’” said Jacobsen backstage at the Greek Theater, before a recent Silk Road Ensemble performance.
